Jane Burn
Jane grew up in Hampshire and attended The Royal Ballet Lower and Upper Schools from 1986 to 1991. In 1991 she won the Professional Prize at The Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition and joined The Royal Ballet company later that year. During her time at The Royal Ballet she graduated to Senior Soloist.
In 2003 Jane retired from her performance career and after a period working in the Royal Opera House Education Department and as an assistant to Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, Jane retrained to teach the Pilates method, attending Alan Herdman’s training course. She began her professional Pilates teaching journey at Andreas Reyneke’s studio in Notting Hill, alongside teaching a Pilates course at The Royal Ballet Upper School.
In her 20 years as a Pilates Teacher Jane has worked both with former and current athletes and those living with complex musculo-skeletal conditions and injuries. She continues to receive regular referrals from several eminent London-based GP’s, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists. She also continues to work with professional and young dancers in her capacity as a Pilates Teacher and, when time permits, delivers Ballet workshops to some of the major dance schools in London.
Pilates
Pilates has been a part of my life since the age of fourteen when I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Hana Jones, one of the founder members of the Pilates Foundation. I recognised early on the physical benefits and mental focus the method brought to me as a young and aspiring dancer. Pilates helped keep me on my top game as a professional dancer and helped me through a year of serious injury and a return to the stage. However I think the true strength of the method lies in its versatility in application to all walks of life. Beyond the physical benefits of a stronger more flexible and balanced body my clients have often reported better sleep patterns, lower stress levels and a sense of well being. From ADHD to symptoms of anxiety and depression, this mind body practice can offer a valuable tool in navigating the stresses and strains of modern life.
I aim to fit exercises to the individual client, tailoring programmes for a wide range of people of different age, exercise experience and physical need. Pilates is a great adjunct to dance and sports training which can also benefit anyone wishing to improve their physical fitness and wellbeing and those wanting to become more efficient and effective in their daily lives.
